Speaker Biography

Dr. Dennis (Denny) Roberts is Assistant Vice President for Faculty and Student Services of the Qatar Foundation. Prior to arriving in Qatar in November, 2007, Dr. Roberts served as Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at Miami University in Oxford, OH, U.S.A. for thirteen years. His responsibilities at Qatar Foundation include working with QF staff who coordinate recruitment/admission, financial assistance, campus and residence life, and other emerging programs. The Qatar Foundation staff of Faculty and Student Services work collaboratively with the student affairs staff in each of Education City's branch campuses; the focus of this work is enhancing the learning opportunities available for students and creating a stronger sense of campus community. Dr. Roberts is a former president of the American College Personnel Association, has authored three books, and over thirty book chapters and other articles. He presently serves as a Senior Scholar of the American College Personnel Association, has been a member of the International Leadership Association from its founding, and serves on the Board of Trustees of the LeaderShape Institute.

Scholarship interests for Denny include the origins of student affairs work, its philosophy, and current innovative practice. Leadership and community building have also been a career-long focus. Deeper Learning in Leadership was published in 2007 and combines student affairs practice as a critical element that enhances student learning with leadership learning as a core responsibility of higher education. These scholarship interests drew Denny to Qatar Foundation as a place that is experimenting with strategies and models of learning that will be effective in the cultural and political complexity of the 21st century. The question remains – how can theory be aligned with the reality and opportunity of student development in the modern global university? To learn more visit Denny's blog, "Pursuing Leadership".
