In order to review over 515 proposal submissions in a manner both comprehensive
and fair, the ILA implements a rigorous review process. Over the course of a
two-month period, each proposal is reviewed by at least five and as many as sixteen
individuals to select the very best to be presented at the conference.
Phase 1 Review – ILA Member Blind Review
A call for reviewers was issued in February to all ILA Members,
to which over 300 ILA members volunteered to review proposals. Reviewers are assigned to
proposals based on how well their expertise matches a proposal’s topic. Reviewer expertise
and proposal topic are self-selected by the respective parties. Reviewers are not assigned
their own proposal, or a proposal of a colleague. Proposal author names are removed prior to review.
Three to four reviewers are assigned to each proposal, and are evaluated
using the same scoring rubric
which is made available to proposal submitters on the ILA
website. Papers that were submitted to the Leadership Scholarship Refereed Paper Track
are evaluated upon an additional scoring rubric.
The Chair and Chair-Elect for each Presentation Track confirm all scoring
completed during Phase 1. There are six Presentation Tracks to which proposals could be
submitted, and a proposal could identify up to two Presentation Tracks. Each Presentation
Track provided guidelines which are made available on the ILA website.
Phase 2 Review – Presentation Track Evaluation
The Presentation Track teams, consisting of three individuals (Chair, Chair-Elect,
and Volunteer Member), convene for three days in the beginning of April to review all proposals
that were confirmed as receiving above average evaluations in Phase 1. These teams discuss and
evaluate hundreds of proposals throughout the three days, in the end recommending proposals to
be presented within their Presentation Track
Phase 3 Review – ILA Program Committee
The ILA Program Committee reviews all recommended proposals to confirm that all
Requirements and Guidelines are met and to ensure a balanced, excellent program. Once these items
are confirmed, the ILA office issues notifications of acceptance or non-acceptance by email to all individuals who submitted proposals to the
conference.
