The Business Leadership Track encourages submissions from both applied/scholarly and practitioner-oriented perspectives that focus on challenges and solutions for business leaders given the context of economic, social, organizational, and environmental realities. These challenges may include: a) navigating and potentially merging realities to bring about mutual influence; b) leveraging global worldviews for business sustainability; c) forging new relationships between for-profit and other sectors; and d) leading a business with an eye toward profit with consideration of unanticipated consequences in other sectors, geographic areas, or contexts. Questions to explore may include: How are diverse visions fostered, communicated, and aligned with employee performance; how can differences in social identities and worldviews be an asset; and which leadership skills, approaches, and other tools link to tangible results? Scholars and practitioners seeking to connect and collaborate with each other are encouraged to submit proposals together.
Note: Priority will be given to submissions that include business leaders as presenters/panelists, and that clearly state and support the relevance to current and strategic business leaders.

This year, the submissions for the Leadership Development (LD) Track should be crafted with a clear focus and relationship to the 2017 Conference theme: Leading Through Turbulent Times. Submissions may address the theme through a "local" or international (cross cultural) perspective, correlating to government, business, or non-profit sectors.
The Leadership Development MIG is a community for leadership coaches, consultants, human resource managers, program directors, leaders, and other professionals, that creates opportunities to connect across sectors—examining best practices, new ideas, and the integration and application of leadership development, theory, and practice.
Important note: Priority will be given to submissions that show a clear relevance to the conference theme. The phrase "Turbulent Times" does not need to be in the title, and in fact, a submission will not necessarily be considered relevant to the conference theme solely based on a title. Therefore, consider how the Leadership Development categories (below) might be developed into submissions with direct relevance to the conference theme of Leadership in Turbulent Times:

The Leadership Education Track creates space to discuss and advance grounded, practical theory and research about the teaching and learning of leadership. More specifically, members explore how best to think about leadership processes and, in turn, the education of leaders; especially leaders for today's turbulent world. In times of increasing uncertainty and volatility, and as social identities become increasingly fragmented and interactional processes increasingly complex and open, we need to educate and develop leaders who can act into leadership moments more thoughtfully and effectively; helping move challenging, complex experiences forward in more productive, coordinated and meaningful ways. To that end, the LE Track encourages submissions that answer or explore the following questions related to the 2017 ILA theme: Leadership in Turbulent Times.
Note: Paper presentation submissions to the Leadership Education track will be considered for the “Most Publishable Leadership Education Paper” award, sponsored by SAGE Publishing. The winner(s) will receive a travel allowance to attend ILA Brussels.
- How do we rethink, reframe and reimagine change/turbulence/disruption so that it becomes desirable, productive and manageable; in other words, how do we harness the potential found in times of disruptive turbulence to collectively bring about desirable outcomes?
- How must leadership theory and practice evolve in order to be responsive to our environmental and social contexts where change and instability is the norm?
- How do we teach leadership so that students find the courage to act and have voice in times of increasing uncertainty and personal risk, especially when it concerns matters of social and economic injustice, inequality, and other critical issues?
- What types of challenges do "turbulent times" present for leaders in today's world; how best should we approach these challenges?
- How do we teach self-critical, reflective processes in times of increased turbulence, urgency, and individualism?
- How do we teach and maintain a focus on ethics in worlds where anything goes, or integrity and authenticity in worlds that are mediated and self-promotional?
- How do we develop and sustain trusting, meaningful relationships in ambiguous and amorphous social structures?
- What are the core values and objectives that bind us together as leadership educators; how do we work together and live our values during these challenging and turbulent times?

The Leadership Scholarship Track provides a dynamic forum for scholars from across sectors, disciplines, and career paths to share and learn about cutting edge research and scholarship in leadership studies. The Leadership Scholarship Track encourages the submission of high-quality scholarly proposals on leadership from every discipline and school of thought. Authors are encouraged to submit papers, presentations, panels, and workshops that advance knowledge and raise issues with regard to leadership scholarship and research. Individual papers should report on a systematic investigation and study of a leadership topic in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions. Research papers demonstrating theoretical and practical relevance, rigorous methods, and results are preferred. Symposia linking a number of scholarly papers across a leadership theme, approaching a leadership theme from various methods, comparing theoretical paradigms, or emphasizing a specific methodology are welcomed. Preferences will be given to submissions demonstrating strong theory and research methodology.
Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to:
- Advances and dilemmas in leadership theory and research
- Assessment and evaluation
- Diverse leader identity development
- Dyadic or multi-level theory and research (e.g., study of followership, leadership systems)
- Evidence-based leadership practice
- How to submit to journals and importance of reviewer criteria in publishing opportunities
- Inclusivity in regards to innovative methods, populations, or contexts
- Methodology - Quantitative, Qualitative, or mixed methods and research
- Social construction of leadership and leadership perceptions (e.g., implicit leadership theory)
- Humanities or Natural Sciences approaches to the study of leadership
- Use of technology in the process of and the study of leadership
Pre-conference workshop submissions emphasizing innovative or emerging research methodologies or strategies are encouraged. Pre-conference workshop submissions should (a) describe the specific content to be taught in the workshop and (b) indicate whether the coverage of the material will be basic or advanced. Submissions should include (c) an outline of the pre-conference workshop's flow and time usage and (d) a list of 3-4 learning objectives. Curricula vitae of pre-conference workshop presenters/facilitators are requested.

The Public Leadership Track encourages submissions from both applied/scholarly and practitioner-oriented perspectives that focus on challenges and solutions for those who practice, study, and teach leadership in fields that serve the greater public good. The Public Leadership Member Interest Group focuses on global and local complex challenges and their leadership implications in the context of political, governmental, non-profit, social, civic, military contexts, organizations, and institutions. Increasingly so, this also incorporates collaborative efforts between the aforementioned organizations, society-at-large, and for-profit businesses.
The sharing of ideas and expertise will be warmly welcomed and encouraged through sessions, presentations, panel discussions, workshops, roundtables, display posters, and pre-conference submissions.
We invite you to also go to ILA Intersections to explore ideas and opportunities for collaboration. Submissions involving joint contributions from other tracks are also encouraged.

The Youth Leadership Track seeks to create a rich dialogue among leadership scholars, practitioners, educators, program directors, coaches, consultants, thought-leaders, students, government, and other leaders focused on producing research and implementing strategies in support of youth leadership development. This track encourages collaboration and group presentations, as well as individual presentations.
This track encourages submissions that explore the following questions:
- What are high-impact practices that foster cross-cultural youth leadership development?
- What leadership skills will young leaders need to thrive in the 21st century?
- What strategies and approaches can be deployed to create intergenerational relationship building and partnerships for youth leadership development?
- What are the theoretical advances needed in order to sustain robust youth leadership scholarship?
- What are skill sets that youth will need to hone to become leaders in turbulent times?
- What qualities will best prepare youth leaders to lead in a shifting world?
- What is the impact of social justice movements on youth leaders at local, regional, national and international levels?
- How do youth leaders shift their leadership styles based on the changing times we are living in?
- What knowledge can youth leaders share with our community to gain a better understanding of the needs of young leaders?
- How do we best prepare youth leaders to develop as socially, racially, and economically-sensitive leaders?
