General Information

ILA 2008 features numerous networking opportunities with an anticipated 700+ participants, 100+ simultaneous sessions facilitated by presenters from around the world on a wide range of leadership research, programs, and trends, a leadership book fair, author signings, and more!

Keynote Speakers

The ILA is pleased to announce our first three confirmed keynote speakers for ILA 2008, Leadership: Portraits of the Past, Visions for the Future.  Stay tuned for future announcements!

Connie Rice is renowned for her unconventional approaches to tackling problems of inequity and exclusion. Rice has received more than 50 major awards for her leadership of diverse coalitions, and her non-traditional approaches to litigating major cases involving police misconduct, employment discrimination and fair public resource allocation. In 2006, Los Angeles Times West Magazine named Rice one of the 100 most powerful people in Southern California, and Pasadena Weekly placed Rice first in their listing of most powerful women. Few speakers offer the breadth of experience or the depth of knowledge and insight on executive leadership, organizational change, and leadership development as Jay Conger. A prolific writer, he has written or co-written more than 90 articles and 12 books, his most recent being The Practice of Leadership. He holds the Kravis Research Chair in Leadership Studies at Claremont McKenna College. Learn more...

Christine Loh, a former elected member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council, is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of the independent, non-profit public policy think tank, Civic Exchange. Conference Hotel

This year's conference hotel is the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles, CA.  A stunning example of mid-century modernism, the hotel was completely refurbished during the past 2-years.  Rare among hotels in the region is the 7 acres of beautifully landscaped "patio," a California-style backyard living space.  Learn more about the history of the hotel, its role in Hollywood and Politics, and some of the local amenities available (pdf).

Conference Hotel

We have filled our room blocks at the Hyatt and Marriott. You could still try them first to see if there has been a cancellation.

Single to Quad Occupancy:  $183 + tax
Regency Club: $233 + tax
Suite: $305 + tax

Call 1.310.228.1234 and mention in-house reservation for ILA.

Alternate Hotels

We have an alternative block for the same price just 4 blocks from the Hyatt.

Courtyard Marriott Century City
10320 West Olympic Blvd, LA, CA

For reservations, please call 1.800.321.2211 or 1.310.556.2777

$183 plus tax, single and double occupancy - Filled
$239 plus tax, single and double occupancy - Best Available Rate

Another hotel considering the best deal right now and without skimping on luxury or customer reviews is

Hotel Palomar Los Angeles - Westwood - a Kimpton Hotel
10740 Wilshire Blvd. at Selby Avenue LA, CA

For reservations, please call 800.472.8556

The hotel just opened in May of 2008, and is listed as a 4 star establishment, with different websites listing it as a 96% or higher recommendation from guests and a 4.8/5 review. It is 1.29 miles from the Hyatt as the crow flies, and 2.31 miles if driving. We have no group deal at this hotel, and thus I would recommend booking through Expedia.com, Hotels.com, or the Hotels website itself. These three sites listed the lowest rate of $219 dollars for 2 double beds. Based on net reviews, this rate is comparable to the Hyatt, and the amenities appear to match it. The hotel is listed as top rated by Trip Advisor and the website of the hotel is http://www.hotelpalomar-lawestwood.com/index.html. If you book through the hotel, a dollar more will purchase a complimentary breakfast.

Want to save costs at the conference??  Consider sharing a room with another conference attendee.  It's a great way to get to know a colleague.  Sign-up for our roommate matching service.

Remember, the conference opens at 4:00 PM on Wed. November 12th, with preconference workshops taking place Wed. morning beginning at 10:30 AM.  The conference closes at approx. 2pm Sat. November 15th.

Museum of Tolerance
The twentieth century has been documented as the most lethal century in history because of the large number of mass killings, ethnic cleansings, terrorist acts, wars, and genocides. Now, the world is on pace to set a new record for the number of people killed in a century. The Simon Wiesenthal Center Museum of Tolerance (www.museumoftolerance.com) is an interactive, high-tech experience that uses the Holocaust along with current events as case studies of what can happen when hate proliferates or is not effectively countered. This 4-hour docent led tour ending at 3pm, includes lunch and a facilitated discussion on the museum experience. Participants should indicate if they prefer van service to the Museum or a 20-minute walk. ILA member and Longtime Museum of Tolerance faculty member, Mike Cortrite, will be one of our tour guides.

Learning How to Look: The Art of Observation and Leadership Development At the J. Paul Getty Museum
The Learning How to Look program, to be facilitated by ILA member and Union Institute and College Professor Anu Mitra, enables participants to look at art with the intention of making sense of seeming chaos. By being placed in a situation where one has to “read” an art piece—presumably an activity with which most of us have limited facility—one is encouraged to see things with heightened and authentic awareness. The act of looking—as if for the first time—urges the participants to see comprehensively, accurately, and contextually. This in turn provides an opportunity to think creatively on how the art of looking is related to leadership development. There will be about an hour after the program to explore the Getty Museum (www.getty.edu/) and gardens on your own. Buses depart from the Hyatt Regency at 10:30, and leave the Getty at 3; a boxed lunch will be provided. Registration is required in advance.

As the ILA prepares to celebrate its 10th Anniversary Conference, we have also been at work on a new project that will carry into both the future of the ILA and the future of leadership studies: the Leadership Legacy Project. Beginning with this year’s conference in Los Angeles, the ILA will induct six individuals from the field of leadership studies into the Legacy Project by presenting each of them with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The honorees have all made significant and diverse contributions to the field of leadership, and their portraits will be proudly displayed on the newly created Legacy Wall at the James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership at the University of Maryland. The first people to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award represent the full spectrum of leadership studies, and their lives and works will be honored throughout the conference.  Recipients will give brief remarks during their award ceremonies.

When: Thursday, Nov. 13, 6:30-9:00 PM
Cost: $60 (the survey normally costs $150)
Registration Required? YES - BY OCTOBER 26
In today’s global environment, it’s vital to understand – and master – the factors that can maximize the probability of success. The ILA and the Thunderbird School of Global Management are offering a special session at the LA conference for those who are interested in increasing their ability to lead, research, and work successfully in an increasingly complex global environment. The survey is internet based and very user friendly. It takes eight minutes to complete and its 91-questions provide a wealth of information on your own profile of Global Mindset. It also compares your scores with those of a benchmark of over 3500 respondents in tens of countries. During the 2 ½ hour session at the conference, Mansour Javidan will review the results and offer specific strategies for developing a stronger global mindset in both individuals, corporations, NGOs, universities and other organizations. Due to the nature of this session, all registrations must be received by October 22 and the online survey must be completed by November 2.  Results will be distributed at the door to the event.   Light refreshments are included in the cost of the session.
