Museum of Tolerance
The twentieth century has been documented as the most lethal century in history because of the large number of mass killings, ethnic cleansings, terrorist acts, wars, and genocides. Now, the world is on pace to set a new record for the number of people killed in a century. The Simon Wiesenthal Center Museum of Tolerance (www.museumoftolerance.com) is an interactive, high-tech experience that uses the Holocaust along with current events as case studies of what can happen when hate proliferates or is not effectively countered. This 4-hour docent led tour ending at 3pm, includes lunch and a facilitated discussion on the museum experience. Participants should indicate if they prefer van service to the Museum or a 20-minute walk. ILA member and Longtime Museum of Tolerance faculty member, Mike Cortrite, will be one of our tour guides.
Learning How to Look: The Art of Observation and Leadership Development
At the J. Paul Getty Museum
The Learning How to Look program, to be facilitated by ILA member and Union Institute and College Professor Anu Mitra, enables participants to look at art with the intention of making sense of seeming chaos. By being placed in a situation where one has to “read” an art piece—presumably an activity with which most of us have limited facility—one is encouraged to see things with heightened and authentic awareness. The act of looking—as if for the first time—urges the participants to see comprehensively, accurately, and contextually. This in turn provides an opportunity to think creatively on how the art of looking is related to leadership development. There will be about an hour after the program to explore the Getty Museum (www.getty.edu/) and gardens on your own. Buses depart from the Hyatt Regency at 10:30, and leave the Getty at 3; a boxed lunch will be provided. Registration is required in advance.
