"I take great pleasure in highly recommending the Next Generation Leadership conference that will take place in Pretoria, 30-31 May 2018. Hosted by the International Leadership Association and the Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership at the University of Pretoria, the conference embodies several elements that I consider to be essential to the future of leadership: (1) a focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and its 17 global leadership challenges facing next generation leadership; (2) a focus on the importance of developing the leadership capacity of youth across Africa and the rest of the world to engage proactively with pressing challenges in business and society; (3) a multi-stakeholder perspective that brings together international, continental and local experts from government, industry, academia, civil society, and business.

The world is at a critical juncture. While we have identified the global challenges facing the planet, there is an urgent need to mobilize the next generation who, by all indications, may bear the brunt of insufficient action. The location of the conference in Africa underscores our need to mobilize youth. Fourteen of the 15 countries with the youngest population are in Africa. The conference will provide an opportunity to have intense conversations about developing a next generation of leaders who embrace responsible leadership — an ethical leadership that embraces the connectedness of the planet with a commitment to enabling a better world for all. We cannot leave it to chance that the right leadership will emerge but need to be proactive in identifying best practices and innovative ways to work with youth in developing the next generation of leadership.

I highly appreciate the tremendous amount of voluntary work from conference co-chairs Lize Booysen and Derick de Jongh. They have put together an inspiring program bringing together people working to create multi-disciplinary ideas, solutions-oriented approaches, and collaborative practices for leading meaningful change in sustainable, ethical, and inclusive ways. I receive great benefit from my membership in the ILA and I encourage others to join today and register for Next Generation Leadership."
