October 2003 Membership Survey Results & Action Steps

Below, find the results of the close-ended questions.  Action steps are indicated in red beneath each question.

Q3. Should ILA provide an area where members can list calls for papers, conferences, workshops, etc on a calendar?

100% Answered Yes!

As the only question upon which we had 100% agreement, we are exploring how we can offer this in a cost-efficient manner.

Q4. Should ILA provide an area where members can register their expertise and willingness to be available for consultation on either a paid or volunteer basis to other members?

88% Yes, 12% No

This will be implemented as part of the "opt-in" online directory (see Q10 below)

Q6. ILA is planning to feature members, member publications, and member organizations on the Web site.  Should these features be viewable by any visitor or should they only be viewable by ILA members?  Note: Yes=Anyone should be able to view them.  No= Only members should be able to view them.

77% yes, 23% No

This feature will launch in January, 2004.  When asked "why" they responded the way they did, survey participants expressed two main themes: 1) As a promotional tool, members would like everyone who visits the ILA Web site to learn about their work (hence the yes, response); and 2) ILA members should receive benefits that non-members do not (hence the No response).

As a middle-ground between these two ideas, our feature is set up as follows:  Anyone visiting the ILA Web site will be able to read the feature, including an abstract of the work.  However, only members will be able to download an exclusive members-only pdf file of a sample chapter from the book.

Q8.  If ILA featured a pre-publication article by a member on a leadership topic, how likely would you be to read the article and offer comments on a members-only bulletin board?

2% Extremely Likely, 17% Very Likely, 41% Somewhat Likely, 20% Not Very Likely, 20% Extremely UnLikely

Q9. If ILA created a two-week online forum on a particular leadership question, how likely would you be to participate? (note: participation would take the form of responding to the question and/or responding to a response made by another participant by writing a message to be displayed on a members-only bulletin board)

2% Extremely Likely, 5% Very Likely, 41% Somewhat Likely, 41% Not Very Likely, 11% Extremely Unlikely

Q10. Should ILA create a password protected searchable online directory of all members, including name, affiliation, and work contact information?

79% Yes 21% No

We are planning to create this "opt-in" online directory early in 2004.  Look for your chance to add yourself to the directory.   Note: When asked why they responded as they did, the largest objection by those who answered "No," is that they did not want their information available online.  This is why we have decided to make this an "opt-in" directory.  In other words, members must register themselves for this.  Inclusion is not automatic.
