Thank you Rebecca for your
involvement!
Rebecca Henderson graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville with a B.S. in Business Administration, her majors being marketing and finance. Because her interest in community leadership grew over the years, and feeling that more education would allow her to better be of assistance to others, Rebecca embarked on an M.S. in Community Leadership from Duquesne University, graduating with a 4.0 in August, 2009. Soon after graduation from college, Rebecca served as coordinator of volunteers for SHARE: Southern Appalachian Food Bank, located in Knoxville. Following a move back to her hometown of Johnson City, she worked in various capacities in two locally owned banks for several years. Missing the opportunity to be as involved in her community as she would like, she worked as a project director and was selected to be the interim executive director of The Volunteer Center. In this capacity, she oversaw its merger with the United Way of Johnson City (now the United Way of Washington County). Over the years, Rebecca has served on over two dozen nonprofit boards of directors, ranging in scope from local to international, thus providing her with a broad range of volunteer and nonprofit experience. Some of her most meaningful volunteer experiences have been with Girl Scouting and with the Junior Leagues, two membership-based organizations that have
fed Rebecca’s interest in leadership opportunities and development. When she was on the board of directors of Girl Scouts of the Appalachian Council (formerly Appalachian Girl Scout Council), Rebecca served as chair of the Council Performance Assessment, Strategic Planning and Bylaws Committees. She also served as President of the Council. Following her tenure as Council President, Rebecca
served as a National Operational Volunteer (NOV), specializing in strategic planning. After her NOV term, she
returned to the Girl Scouts of the Appalachian Council board of directors, where she co-chaired that Council’s efforts in realigning (merging) with two other Councils. She chaired the governance sub-committee of the realignment committee. Currently, she serves as vice-chair of the Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians, and is on the Council’s strategic planning work group.
Rebecca has been honored in various ways for the leadership she has demonstrated in various organizations. The JLJC has honored her with the following awards: Rosalie Jennings Brandt King Award for Outstanding In-League and Community Service, Outstanding Sustainer Award, Sustainer of the Year Award, and the Volunteer Service Gold Award, which honors members who have volunteered 1500 hours of volunteer service to the community, within a two-year timeframe. The Johnson City Seniors’ Center named her to the Ambassador Wall of Fame. Girl Scouts of the Appalachian Council named Rebecca as a “Woman Who Makes a Difference.” Perhaps the honor that Rebecca cherishes the most is having been awarded the Thanks Badge, which is Girl Scouting’s highest honor. Rebecca loves learning, and enjoys attending workshops, seminars and trainings that will help her to help others. She has completed GSUSA’s “Training the Trainer” series, as well as a similar series by AJLI. She has also completed facilitation trainings provided by both of those organizations and particularly enjoys facilitating. Taken together, her training and facilitation background have provided her with the skills to provide numerous workshops on time management and “To Lead is To Serve”, a servant-leader model of recruiting and retaining volunteers, made popular by Shar McBee. In her spare time, Rebecca enjoys reading, playing with her four Newfoundland dogs, cooking and writing a book designed to make the work of leadership level community influencers fun, easy and effective.
