The House of Leadership: Finding the Foundations of your Personal Leadership Development

Description: The House of Leadership is a powerful method, used in our programs around the world, for reflection on personal leadership development. Through questioning, participants will be stimulated to think creatively about their lifestyle, passions, drives, dreams, visions, and communication style – and to construct their own house of leadership. Discussion will focus on the strength of their leadership foundation, making changes to interior or exterior design, and developing a roadmap to lead to their leadership destination.

Abstract: We have developed a workshop in which participants unfold their own “house of leadership”. In our leadership programs, it leads to deep insights in personal leadership development. The workshop starts with an exercise in which participants will construct their own house of leadership based on concurrent questions that lead to reflection. Participants construct the house by finding personal symbols that represent different personal leadership characteristics.

Through questioning, participants are stimulated to think creatively about their own lifestyle, communication style, passions, drives, dreams and visions. Other questions define which instruments and symbols they use as a leader. By using the 'house of leadership' as a metaphor, participants are incited to do likewise in their teaching. At the same time they experience the strength of using a metaphor in leadership.

Participants will discuss on key leadership issues, like the strength of their own leadership foundation and making changes to interior or exterior design. They will use the house of leadership as a roadmap for their way of leading. Therefore, we also encourage students at the ILA to participate and experience the strength of this method.

In our 4-days leadership programs across the world, we experience that participants have difficulties in applying leadership theories to their own leadership practice. They want to find out where they stand, what instruments they can use and in what way they can best behave as a leader. To answer these questions and to improve the connection between theory and practice we developed this workshop and applied it successfully in our programs.

This new practical leadership experience is an effective way to find and reflect on your own leadership style. The exercise focuses both on authenticity and creativity, two major characteristics of excellent leadership. Participants will receive a trainer's guide to be able to apply this method in their own teaching.

After this workshop participants know:
−the basic elements of their own leadership style
−how they can adapt their style to different situations and cultures
−how to apply this new method in their own teaching and training
