This full-day doctoral consortium is for doctoral students at any stage of their program. In understanding that the study of leadership is multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary, students studying leadership from any discipline are welcome!

The purpose of the doctoral consortium is to create a forum in which students from universities around the world who are pursuing their doctoral degrees in leadership can gather, form a sense of community, get feedback on research agendas, and advance their careers by learning from one another and from established scholars and practitioners in the field.

The morning sessions will include discussions with faculty on tips for successful doctoral students, goal setting, and digging into the dissertation process. The afternoon sessions will provide space for current students to discuss the doctoral journey with each other, recent graduates, and scholars. Also, consortium participants will have specific one-on-one time in the afternoon with established leadership scholars to discuss their research and doctoral journey. Interested students will be invited to submit their research interests / topics in advance for intentional pairing with seasoned scholars/practitioners. Any topic focused on leadership and all methodological approaches are welcome!

James (Gus) Gustafson is the Leadership Scholar-in-Residence at the Center for Values-Driven Leadership (Benedictine University) – where he co-architected and teaches in the Executive Doctoral Program. He also served for the last five years as Executive Minister and Chief Transformation Officer at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines, Iowa (the largest and fastest growing Lutheran church in the USA). Prior to leading Hope, Gus was responsible for Strategic Leadership Research and Development and Organizational Transformation at U.S. Cellular, where he received several awards for his pioneering work in leadership development and organizational transformation.



Kathy L. Guthrie, Ph.D., is associate professor in the higher education program, director of the Leadership Learning Research Center, and coordinator of the Undergraduate Certificate in Leadership Studies at Florida State University. She currently serves as associate editor for the New Directions in Student Leadership series and editor of the Contemporary Perspectives in Leadership Learning book series. Her research focuses on leadership learning outcomes, environment of leadership and civic education, and technology in leadership education. Guthrie was awarded as a 2017 ACPA Diamond Honoree, 2015 Florida State Transformation through Teaching Award, and College of Education Teaching Award in 2014.
