On Thursday December 10, 2008 the ILA officially approved the
formation of two new Affinity Groups for the Association. These groups are the
Leadership Education Program Directors, Chairs, and Deans Affinity Group, and
the Student Affinity Group. Both groups garnered the requisite number of ILA
Member petition signatures, and received “wholehearted” endorsement from ILA
President Cynthia Cherrey.
The Leadership Education Program Directors, Chairs, and Deans Affinity Group
will endeavor to serve the specific needs of the aforementioned constituents.
This new initiative within ILA will provide a more private forum for networking
and information sharing among this segment of the ILA membership. Participants
in this Affinity Group will create specific opportunities to exchange
experiences that advance the ILA’s mission to promote “a deeper understanding of
leadership knowledge and practices for the greater good of individuals and
communities worldwide.”

The Student Affinity Group has established itself to connect student members
with one another and throughout the ILA. This group aims to increase student
involvement in the Association, submit fresh ideas, and infuse the unique brand
of energy that only a group of student members can generate.
Each group has plans to work with the ILA staff to develop meaningful ways to
connect members who are interested in participating. In the meantime, please
contact the leaders of each group for more information. For more information
about the Leadership Education Program Directors, Chairs, and Deans Affinity
Group, contact Sandra Peart, Dean Jepson School of Leadership Studies- speart@richmond.edu. For more information about the Student Affinity Group,
contact Natalie Coers, Graduate Student at the University of Georgia - ncoers@uga.edu.
According to the ILA bylaws: An affinity group is intended to help members find
others with mutual interests for a more sustained conversation. A group of
thirty (30) or more Members of the ILA may petition the President/Chair to
establish an Affinity Group. Petitions shall be routinely processed unless
special circumstances warrant a review by the Board. Each petition to establish
an Affinity Group must contain a title for the group and be accompanied by a
description of the unique purpose of the group, in contrast to existing Member
Interest Groups.
These are the first two affinity groups to form in the association.
Congratulations! We look forward to your impact on the ILA!
