Learning Leadership from the Art Metaphor: an example of leadership development at IEDC-Bled School of Management, Slovenia

MONDAY, 9 NOVEMBER, 7:30 to 8:45 EST

Danica Purg, Edina Selesković and Elnura Irmatova will guide you through the world of art and leadership finding answers to the introspection. On this journey together you will discover how artists employ inventiveness in the process of creation. Together you will learn how to perceive the world and ourselves through a different perspective, to see beyond the discernible. Cultivating creativity and the ability to navigate complexity, they will use practices of visual art & design, in order to be able to apply them to leadership.

Today we search for leadership that is able to cope with the complexities of the 21st century, new elements have been added to the concept: inspirational, beautiful, and artful. The hypothesis is that the new leadership could be defined by the same basic characteristics as art: inspiration, imagination, intuition, authenticity, and skills.
In order to let leaders discover their leadership mind-set and style and offer a way to communicate about it, Danica and those at IEDC looked for a more indirect, a metaphorical method to approach this issue. They decided to explore the use of art style periods, realizing that in arts a continuous process of change takes place, inspired and influenced by the creativity of artists and the “Zeitgeist”. Comparable processes are happening in the business environment. Art and artist can be considered as representing the cultural history of civilizations, also as an expression of the structural and disrupting changes in the society.
They discovered that the “artification” of society through contemporary aesthetics can encourage public discourse, extended into the online and offline world. Thus, art can regain its relevance in today and tomorrow regaining the connection we lost.
We look forward to your questions and conversations.
